Tips for Keeping Your Sewer Line Clog-Free

Sewer line clogs can cause a lot of problems for your home, but they are fortunately easy to avoid with preventative maintenance. Here are some ways to keep your sewer line clog-free.

1. Be Careful What You Flush

As a rule, the only things to flush down your toilet are toilet paper and human waste. Throw everything else, including “flushable” wipes and other personal care products, in the trash. Even though the wipes are allegedly septic-safe, they can still clog your toilet and/or your sewer line if you flush too many of them.

2. Learn What Not to Put in Your Garbage Disposal

As tempting as it is to put all your food waste down your garbage disposal, some things should go in the trash instead. This includes starchy foods such as potatoes, rice, and pasta. These congeal in water and can create a blockage in your drain or sewer line. Nuts, banana peels, eggshells, celery, and asparagus can also cause problems for your garbage disposal and sewer line, so throw them in the trash instead.

3. Never Pour Cooking Grease Down the Drain

Cooking grease congeals when it cools, which can create a lot of problems if you pour it down your kitchen sink. Instead, pour it into a glass jar or tin can and save it. Your city may be able to recycle it.

4. Equip Your Shower, Bathtub, and Bathroom Sink With Hair Catchers

Hair, grease, and soap scum can combine in a bathroom drain to create a really nasty clog in your plumbing or sewer system. While you can’t avoid letting these things go down your drain while you bathe, you can equip your bathroom drains with hair catchers to keep hair out of your plumbing.

5. Avoid Chemical Drain Cleaners

Chemical drain cleaners seem effective at eliminating clogs in your plumbing, but they are caustic enough to eventually damage your pipes. Instead, opt for a combination of distilled white vinegar and baking soda to clear your pipes. The mixture reacts quickly to dislodge clogs without damaging your drains.

6. Schedule a Sewer Line Inspection

If you suspect that you have problems with your sewer line, you can schedule a sewer line inspection. This is usually done with a flexible camera that a plumber sends down your drain and into the pipeline to find any blockages, collapses, and other issues that might be causing your plumbing problems.
